The humble kitchen. We all know it, and we all start our day in it most of the time, however at the same time we all have a rather odd love-hate relationship with it. Keeping a clean kitchen can be a bit of a chore, especially when it comes to doing the dishes and regular maintenance. Which is why most people don’t really put a lot of effort into cleaning their kitchens or keeping them tidy constantly.
There is, however, a twist here because a clean and organized kitchen can actually net you a lot of benefits, especially when it comes to your health.
Why it is so important to keep a clean kitchen
Whether you realize it or not, there are a lot of substances that pass through your kitchen regularly.
Everything from water to oils, liquid and solid foods and so on.
These are organic ingredients that have a specific life cycle, which in turn tends to expire rather rapidly, leading to bacterial formations, mold and various other intrusive organisms.
The unwashed dishes that are sitting in your sink have food leftovers and residues on them. No matter how small, unless they are washed off, they will expire, they will rot and they will begin to develop unwanted organisms on them.
This in turn can lead to a wider spread of bacterias and spores, causing your counters, the walls as well as the fresh food in your pantry or cupboards to become riddled with them.
That being said, a messy and dirty kitchens, which have not been cleaned over very long periods of time, have been linked to illnesses such as:
- Respiratory infections
- Digestive problems
- Liver problems
- Skin infections
- Food poisoning
Another think to take into consideration is the fact that dirty kitchens attract pests quite efficiently.
Cockroaches, mice, rats, worms, flies, maggots, just to name a few, are attracted to dirty kitchens because they see them as reliable and bountiful food sources.
This makes them burrow into walls and floors, make giant nests and infest the whole household, everything centered around the kitchen.
It goes more or less without saying that with a clean kitchen on your hands you will not have to worry about these things to begin with.
The actual benefits of having a clean kitchen
A slight financial improvement
One of the leading reasons behind ordering takeout is actually a messy kitchen.
Whenever you walk by you messy kitchen and glance over it, especially after a hard day at work, the last thing you want to do is have to deal with it.
This drives people to simply order takeout and spend a lot more money on food than they otherwise would.
Better quality food
With a cleaner kitchen on your hands, the microscopic dangers are not present. That being said food tends to last a lot longer and remain fresh over a longer period of time, even in storage conditions.
Your first cup of coffee of the day usually is in the kitchen. That being said, you will feel a lot better and you will start your day in a better overall mood after you’ve had your coffee in a clean kitchen rather than a dirty one.
Less stress overall
We spend a lot of time in the kitchen, either enjoying random beverages, cooking our food or eating it.
With a dirty kitchen there are a lot of inconveniences that you would have to deal with, like random smells, sounds, not being able to reach what you want or find what you are looking for and so on.
These little things amount to a lot of stress in the long run, making your entire experience a lot worse than it should be.
Although it might be easy to neglect it and a lot more comfortable to postpone it, the kitchen is actually one of the more important rooms in a household.

So take the extra few minutes each day and make sure that the kitchen itself is clean and organized and you will save yourself a lot of troubles and headaches in the future.
